Gunmen attack Afghan governor's base

  • Two gunmen enter the compound in Kandahar with pistols hidden in their boots
  • They start sporadic firing and continue for 20 minutes
  • The Taliban claim responsibility for the attack

(CNN) -- Two gunmen attacked a governor's compound in southern Afghanistan on Saturday, killing two police officers, the interior ministry said.

The attackers entered the compound in Kandahar with pistols hidden in their boots, according to Sediq Seddiqi, a spokesman for the ministry.

Once in the compound, they started sporadic firing and continued for 20 minutes before Afghan security forces killed them, Seddiqi said.

In addition to the gunmen, two Afghan police officers died in the gunfight.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the attack in a text message.
