(CNN) -- Italy is planning a gathering of allies to discuss how to help Syria the "day after" President Bashar al-Assad leaves power. This latest international initiative to deal with the Syrian conflict is one of the key developments Thursday in the nearly 18-month-long crisis.
Italy to host a meeting on a post-Assad Syria, top diplomat says
Italy is planning to hold an international meeting "in the coming days" to explore the world's "role and responsibilities" in Syria if and when al-Assad departs office, the foreign minister said Thursday.
In a column for the Italian daily La Repubblica, Giulio Terzi said the talks will be held in Rome. They will touch on "security, institution building, economic reconstruction and humanitarian" initiatives, he said.
For months, Western and Arab nations have been discussing ways to hasten a political change and an end to the civil war. Terzi said the European Union, which includes Italy, must play a "front-line role" in transition efforts.
"A sense of urgency is being felt within the international community, especially among like-minded countries, to hasten the end of the conflict and allow Syria to turn the page," he said.
British prime minister calls chemical weapons threat 'unacceptable'
British Prime Minister David Cameron agrees with American President Barack Obama on the use of chemical weapons in Syria.
In a telephone call between the two leaders late Wednesday, "both leaders agreed that the use -- or threat -- of chemical weapons was completely unacceptable and would force them to revisit their approach so far," according to a statement released by the prime minister's office.
