Bomber kills 22 at Afghan wedding

  • The blast injures 40 others
  • It also kills the provincial head of the Afghan intelligence service

(CNN) -- A lone suicide bomber detonated a vest filled with explosives at a wedding in northern Afghanistan on Saturday morning, killing 22 guests, including a top politician, authorities said.

The blast injured 40 others, said Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai, a police spokesman.

The politician, Ahmad Khan Samangani, was hosting his daughter's wedding when the blast tore through the hall in Aybak, capital of Samangan province.

Fatalities also included the provincial head of the Afghan intelligence service, officials said.

"There has been no claim of responsibility so far," Ahmadzai said. "We suspect it is the Taliban who are enemies of Afghanistan."
