Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) -- An improvised explosive device detonated in a village near the northern Pakistani city of Peshawar on Wednesday, killing 11 people traveling in a passenger van, a local government official said.

The van was traveling between two towns in the restive Federally Administered Tribal Areas of northwestern Pakistan when it hit the device, said Zakir Hussain, the commissioner of Kohat Division.

Militant attacks are frequent in the Tribal Areas, which lie along the border with Afghanistan.

Two women and two children were among the dead in the blast, which took place early Wednesday morning, Hussain said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the explosion, he added.
